Emergency Preparedness Week - May 2-8 2021

Posted On Wednesday May 05, 2021

This year, the theme is Emergency Preparedness: Be Ready for Anything. It is an opportunity to consider your plan and know how you will protect yourself, your family and community in the event of an emergency.

During an emergency, we may need to get by without power or tap water and will all need some basic supplies. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency.

There are a range of emergencies our region may face, including a changing climate which is causing more severe weather events, resulting in flash flooding, extreme wind and rain.

Being prepared just makes sense, but what steps should you take?

  • Make a plan so you and your family know what to do
  • Get an emergency kit
  • Secure barbecues and secure or store patio furniture indoors when severe weather is in the forecast.
  • Park your vehicle in a covered area to prevent damage.
  • Stay away from windows, doors and skylights during a storm.
  • Do not drive through flooded intersections or large puddles.
  • Ensure there is proper grading around your home.
  • Update your home inventory and have someone check your property if you are away.
  • Install a sump pump, sewer backup or backflow valve.
  • Consider using resilient building materials when completing repairs.

Are you covered?  Here are a few insurance tips to help you prepare for disasters

  • Insurance will help you recover your property in the event of a disaster
  • Did you know? Everyone needs insurance regardless of whether you own or rent
  • Do you know the most common disasters in your area? Typically Southwestern Ontario experiences high winds, flood and fire. Be sure to factor these weather events into your plan
  • If you experience a disaster do you have the funds for temporary housing and/or repairs to your property? Having insurance will offer protection against financial setbacks caused by insured perils
  • Know your policy. Not all policies are the same, know your risks and review your insurance policy with an experienced insurance representative
  • Are you covered for flooding? Not all policies cover all types of flooding. It is best to review your policy with your insurance representative before a disaster
  • Keep your agent/broker contact information easily accessible
  • Keep a photo log of your home’s contents to help in the event you need to make an insurance claim
