World Desertification & Drought Day

Posted On Thursday June 17, 2021

What is Desertification?
“…the persistent degradation of dryland ecosystems by climatic variations and human activities. It occurs on all continents (except Antarctica) and affects the livelihoods of millions of people…”

Desertification and Drought Day on June 17 is a UN day to promote public awareness about the global loss of land.

Restoring degraded land into healthy land brings economic resilience, creates jobs, raises incomes and increases food security. It helps biodiversity to recover. It locks away the atmospheric carbon warming the Earth, slowing climate change. It can also lessen the impacts of climate change and underpin a green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. LAND is part of the solution!

Why should Canadians care?

Our farm communities can answer this best, however one very good reason:

Food security and local food supply

The preservation of our farmland provides a continued supply of locally grown produce and livestock. “…the COVID-19 pandemic has given people everywhere pause to reconsider their consumption habits, and humanity’s reliance on land for its well-being and health…”

What are Canadian Farmers doing to grow safe, healthy food with a sustainable model?

Science!
“…farmers today rely more on technology, such as artificial intelligence, satellite imaging, drones, and a range of digital tools that help them get the more out of every acre they grow…“Agriculture is one of the most scientifically advanced industries in the world...”
