March Break - Tips for While You Are Away

Posted On Monday March 04, 2019

You have planned the trip. The bags are packed. Excitement is in the air!

Let us help ensure your holiday is free from any unexpected surprises upon your return, with a few tips to consider as you prepare for your time away from home:

Make your home look lived in.

Use timed lights and motion sensors; leave curtains and blinds in their regular position. Noticeable changes in your home’s typical appearance may hint that you are away.

Ask a family friend or neighbour to check in while you are away.

Have someone collect your mail and/or newspapers, park a car in your driveway and check to ensure no damages have occurred to your home.  Make sure that they know how to reach you if something happens.

Double-check that all doors and windows in your home are locked and keep spare keys in a safe spot.

Be sure not to leave car keys in a visible area in your house. Keep valuables, including personal documents out of sight. Consider using a safe deposit box.

Disconnect electronics.

Unplug TV sets, stereos, computers and other electronics or ensure they are plugged into a surge protector.

Do not announce your vacation plans on social media sites.

Social media sites can reach further than you expect. Don’t alert potential thieves to your absence. Only post travel pictures when you are back.

Is your insurance up-to-date?

Before heading out that door, speak to a Middlesex Mutual Agent to help answer any questions you may have.

And most importantly - enjoy your holiday!
